A new algorithm can accurately predict a patient’s 1- and 5-year risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE) using simple clinical variables, according to a study in BMJ. The following were some of the factors predictive of incident VTE: older age, higher BMI, cigarette smoking, varicose veins, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, renal disease, recent hospital admission, antipsychotic drug use, and tamoxifen use. The authors say the algorithm may be useful in identifying patients most likely to benefit from intervention.聽Perhaps it 聽might be useful for your clinical aeroomedical 聽practice as well.

Thanks to the kindness of Dr Fiona Rennie -Aviation and Occupational Medicine- from Emirates聽聽Airlines in Dubai, we can 聽invite to you to see this slide presentation about a聽 pilot with Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT) associated with Factor V Leiden. Dr Fionna Renni participated in an Aeromed-List thread about this issue and has been so kind to send us this interesting聽presentation. Incidence, epidemiology, aetiology, clinical aspects and aeromedical concerns are exposed in a simple and clear , while scientific way.
