At 35,000ft, the klaxon-like howl of a distressed toddler screeches through a pressurised cabin. For travellers already stressed by lengthy security checks, crammed into cramped seating and unnerved by the very fact of being so high above ground, it’s almost enough to make them shatter the Plexiglas windows and jump. One airline is offering what it says is a solution. Budget carrier Air Asia says from February it will provide a “quiet zone” for passengers aged 12 and over at no extra cost.

Police are investigating whether a man found dead on a west London street was a  stowaway who fell from a plane. No-one saw the body fall from the sky on to Portman Avenue. It is not the first incident of this kind on the Heathrow flightpath.  Dr Stephen Veronneau, of the US Federal Aviation Administration, has identified 96 individuals around the world who have tried to travel in plane wheel wells since 1947. The incidents happened on 85 flights. Veronneau is working on the assumption that the Mortlake fatality was a stowaway. Of these, more than three-quarters have proved fatal.

The 83-year-old United Airlines flight attendant will appear in the Guinness World ¬†Records book in October for having the “longest career as a flight attendant” in the world. In over six decades, he has seen the transformation of air travel. He saw meal service improve, the start of in-flight movies, passengers go from dressing up to dressing down, smoking become a federal offense and tighter security in the post-9/11 world. After being offered a buyout, he is retiring, the AP reported.
The leading cause of death in the United States is coronary heart disease (CHD). In 2004,  the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommended against electrocardiogram  (ECG) in asymptomatic adults. Besides, ECG is not recommended as part of periodic health examinations, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians. This report from the USPSTF updates the 2004 recommendations on ECG screening for asymptomatic adults at low, intermediate, or high risk for CHD events.
